Do you speak tango?

In these meanderings I return from time to time (directly or indirectly) to what tango means to me. It’s not about steps. They are part of the vocabulary of the dance, of course. But unless we can fit those within an appropriate structure — with a feeling for the ‘grammar’ and the rhythm of the language — then what we are doing is a clumsy imitation of tango.

There’s a recent post on the ‘In Search of Tango’ blog which makes some interesting points. Click on the quote below to read it.

“Tango is a human language with its own vocabulary and grammar.”

I’m lucky at the moment to be attending a series of classes by Andrés ‘Tanguito’ Cejas and Genoveva Fernández. I love the way they teach. The steps are there, naturally, but they are taught as just one element of a whole structure bounded by the music within which the dancers move. They teach from the heart.

Watch them here, dancing at Salon Canning…

  1. Andreas and Genoveva visited Wilmslow a couple of weeks back, it was nice to see them again in the Uk, I have not seen them since Salon Canning 2008, they have been sort of off the scene since the twins were born. My thanks to Carole for inviting them over again.
BTW where is the Mural, it was missing from the back wall of Canning in the video.

  2. Hi Robin, You took some video footage of me dancing with Geraldine Rojas last Saturday and I would very much like a copy. Would of course pay for any time/materials. I am teaching from 16th July through to 24th July in Leeds, Healy and Sheffield along with Ann. Also doing Privates!!perhaps you could let me have your contact details

  3. Hi Bill,

Not sure if you meant me as several people were videoing (I’m the one with the beard). I did shoot some footage at the ball, mainly of Geraldin and Ezequiel’s set. It was all a bit last-minute; been shooting some stuff for work and the cameras were to hand so I grabbed one on the way out.

As nothing had been properly planned my idea was to take a few general shots as an introduction to G&E. I put together a quick DVD and gave Janeen a few copies, including one to pass on to you and Ann, I believe.

Will check the footage and see if there is any of you dancing with Geraldin (don’t recall at the moment) but it would probaby have been just a glimpse. If I can find such I’ll put it on a DVD (or would you prefer an avi?)

You’ll find my contact details here:
